In the centre of Banja Luka, a short walk from the Ferhadija and the Kastel fortress, stands a small grave that local tradition links to Safikada, said to have been a granddaughter of Ferhad Pasha Sokolović, the sixteenth-century governor who built the Ferhadija. Her story of a forbidden love that ended in tragedy is one of the best-known stories of the city, and it has even been staged as an opera. The grave is enclosed by a low fence with an information board, and visitors still leave flowers and light candles here. The grave remains a well-loved landmark of old Banja Luka.
