Umluj, the al-Hawra' of the early geographers, was a stop on the coastal pilgrim road between al-Wajh and Yanbu. Its old market served the caravans and the people of the coast for generations. The traditional souq lies in the old quarter of Umluj, near the seafront. It is one of the sites of the Egyptian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
