Al-Wajh was one of the main stations of the Egyptian Hajj road, where the medieval writers praised the freshness of the water. The Ottoman fort here guarded the town, its market and the caravans that stopped on their way to Madinah. The fort stands in the old part of al-Wajh, near the historic market and the waterfront. It is one of the sites of the Egyptian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
