Assoura Fort was a station of the Syrian Hajj road between Zumurrud and Hadiyyah, built to guard the wells and shelter the pilgrim caravans on their way to Madinah. The Bir al-Jadid station of the Hejaz Railway stands at the same place. The forts of the route stored provisions, including food for the pilgrims' return journey, and gave shelter to the poor, to lost travellers and to those separated from their caravans. The fort stands in the desert south of Al-Ula, on the old route towards Madinah. It is one of the sites of the Syrian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
