Masjid Uthman ibn Affan, also called Masjid al-Abnus, is counted among the oldest mosques of Historic Jeddah. Tradition connects it with Uthman ibn Affan, under whom Jeddah became the port of Makkah, and it lies in the heart of al-Balad. Archaeologists working in the historic district have identified seven building phases in the mosque. Two ebony columns found on either side of its mihrab have been dated by laboratory analysis to the first or second century AH, and the wood has been traced to Sri Lanka. One visitor reports that the mosque has been closed during the work.
