Masjid Akkash is one of the old mosques of Historic Jeddah, on Qabil Street in the market quarter, with two of its five doors opening onto Souq al-Nada. A date of 1200 AH appears on its doors, and an Ottoman deed of 1188 AH shows the mosque was already standing before then. The Jeddah historian Muhammad Yusuf Tarabulsi relates that it was founded by Akkasha Abaza, a wealthy man who vowed to build a mosque if he was released from prison. Its walnut doors open onto a prayer hall under a raised central dome decorated with geometric patterns and coloured glass, where a well once stood. The mosque was renovated in 1280 AH and again in the twentieth century, when its floor was raised above street level, and a public library was added in 1410 AH. It stands a short walk from Masjid Uthman ibn Affan and Masjid al-Mi'mar.
