Al-Azlam Fort dates from the Mamluk period and was later used by the Ottomans as a station on the Egyptian Hajj road between Duba and al-Wajh. The medieval writers on the pilgrim road, al-Umari and al-Qalqashandi, noted that the wells here were poor and often fit only for the camels. The ruins of the fort and its outbuildings stand in open country north of al-Wajh. It is one of the sites of the Egyptian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
