Dadan was the capital of the ancient kingdoms of Dadan and then Lihyan, which controlled this part of the incense trade route between the seventh and second centuries BCE. The city lay in the fertile valley north of today's Al-Ula, and excavations have uncovered its temple and houses. Above the site, tombs are cut into the cliff face, among them the Lion Tombs, marked by carved lions. Visits start at the Dadan visitor centre and are ticketed through Experience AlUla, often combined with nearby Jabal Ikmah.
