Ramla
The Great Omari Masjid, also called al-Jami' al-Kabir, began as a church built by the Crusaders in the twelfth century. After the Mamluks took Ramla it became a mosque in 1266, in the reign of Sultan Baybars, and a mihrab and minaret were added. The building keeps the plan of the church, with a nave and two aisles divided by pointed arches under a vaulted roof. It is still used for prayer, and it lies in the centre of Ramla, a short walk south of the railway station and close to the White Masjid and the Pool of the Arches.
