Imam Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman Ahmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasa’i was one of the foremost scholars of hadith of the third Islamic century and the compiler of Sunan al-Nasa’i, one of the six major canonical hadith collections. Born in Nasa in Khurasan, he travelled extensively in search of knowledge before settling for many years in Egypt, becoming renowned for his exceptional expertise in hadith, narrators and the authentication of reports. Imam al-Nasa’i died in 303 AH after leaving Damascus during the final period of his life. Classical sources differ over his final resting place, with reports placing his death in Palestine or Makkah, while another early account states that he died in al-Ramla and was buried in Bayt al-Maqdis. A longstanding local tradition in al-Ramla identifies a grave beside the historic White Mosque as his burial place, where a small maqam and grave marker survive within the adjoining cemetery.
