About Bab Zuwayla

Bab Zuwayla was built in 1092 by the Fatimid vizier Badr al-Jamali as the southern gate of the walled city, and it is the only one of the southern gates still standing. It takes its name from the Zuwayla tribe of North African soldiers in the Fatimid army. The gate has two massive round towers, topped since 1420 by the minarets of the mosque of al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh. Visitors can climb to the roof and the minarets for views over the old city, and the Tentmakers' Market lies just beyond it.
