The mosque of al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh was built in 1415 to 1421 by the Mamluk sultan on the site of the prison where he had once been held, as he had vowed to do. It was the last of the great courtyard mosques of the Mamluk period. Its two minarets rise from the towers of Bab Zuwayla beside it, and its bronze-covered doors were taken from the Sultan Hasan Mosque. The sultan and his son are buried in domed tombs inside. The mosque stands on al-Muizz Street just inside Bab Zuwayla.
