The Sultan Selim Masjid, known locally as the Careva (Emperor's) Mosque, is the main mosque of Stolac and dates from the early sixteenth century. It carries the name of Sultan Selim, and it stands in the old bazaar beside the river Bregava. The mosque was destroyed in 1993, along with the other Ottoman buildings of the town. It has since been rebuilt in its original form, and its courtyard, graveyard and minaret again stand at the centre of the old town. Stolac's riverside mills, bridges and stone houses make it one of the most picturesque small towns in Herzegovina.
