About Sinan Bey Masjid, Čajniče

The Sinan Bey Masjid was built in 1570 by Sinan Bey Boljanić, a relative by marriage of the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, and was the centrepiece of his endowment in Čajniče in eastern Bosnia. In 1992 the mosque and the other buildings of the complex were mined and completely destroyed. After archaeological work it was rebuilt on its old foundations over almost nine years, with a large central dome, a portico of three small domes, a stone minaret about 37 metres high and its hand-painted interior restored. It reopened on 12 July 2024.
