The Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge at Višegrad was completed in 1577 for the Grand Vizier, who was born nearby, and designed by Mimar Sinan, the most famous architect of the Ottoman Empire. With eleven stone arches spanning about 180 metres across the Drina, it is one of the masterpieces of Ottoman engineering and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Midway across, a raised terrace called the kapija gave travellers a place to rest. The bridge became world-famous through Ivo Andrić's novel The Bridge on the Drina. It is open to pedestrians, and the best views are from the riverbank on either side.
