Hutovo Blato is a nature park of marshes, reed beds and lakes in the lower Neretva valley, fed by underground karst springs. It lies on one of the main migration routes between Europe and Africa, and more than 240 kinds of birds have been recorded here, from herons and cormorants to kingfishers. Boat trips through the channels and lakes are the best way to see the wildlife, and there are walking trails, an observation tower and a restaurant at the visitor centre. Spring and autumn, during the migrations, are the best seasons to visit.
