Begovina is the family estate of the Rizvanbegović family, built in the nineteenth century for Ali Pasha Rizvanbegović, the powerful governor of Herzegovina. It lies beside the river Bregava and is one of the finest surviving examples of Islamic residential architecture in the country. Behind high stone walls the estate held several houses, guest lodgings, courtyards and gardens, with water channels running through. It was almost completely burned in 1993, and it is now a protected national monument undergoing restoration. Even in its present state, the setting by the river shows the elegance of Ottoman life in Herzegovina.
