Al-Madrasah al-Umariyyah was founded around 1200 by Shaykh Abu Umar Muhammad ibn Qudamah, the brother of the great Hanbali jurist Ibn Qudamah, to teach the Qur'an and the religious sciences to the community that had settled on the slopes of Mount Qasiyun. It grew into one of the largest madrasas of medieval Damascus, with a famous library and hundreds of students. The madrasa gave its name and character to the Salihiyyah quarter. Much of the building is now ruined, but its remains stand among the old lanes near the Mosque of the Hanabilah.
