Emir Abdelkader al-Jaza'iri led the resistance to the French conquest of Algeria from 1832 to 1847. After his surrender he was imprisoned in France and later allowed to settle in Damascus in 1855, where he devoted himself to teaching and to the works of Ibn Arabi. During the riots of 1860 he sheltered thousands of the city's Christians in his homes, an act admired around the world. When he passed away in 1883 he was buried beside Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi in Salihiyyah, as he had wished. In 1966 his remains were taken back to Algeria, and this site marks his former grave beside Ibn Arabi's tomb.
