The al-Zaywani Mosque in the Bab al-Bayd quarter of old Mosul takes its name from Shaykh Muhammad al-Zaywani, a local shaykh whose domed tomb stood on the site. The present mosque dates from the period of the Jalili governors in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, when Sulayman Pasha al-Jalili and his sister Hamra Khatun were among those who paid for it. It has a domed prayer hall with a marble mihrab, an arcaded entrance passage and a red-brick minaret decorated with patterned brickwork, and it has been renovated many times.
