The Great Mosque of al-Nuri was built in 1172–1173 by the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din Mahmud, and for more than eight centuries it was the heart of Mosul. Its leaning brick minaret, al-Hadba, the hunchback, appeared on the Iraqi banknote and became the symbol of the city. The mosque and minaret were rebuilt in recent years in a project led by UNESCO, using the original bricks where possible and keeping the minaret's famous lean, and the mosque reopened for prayer in 2025.
