This shrine on the mound of Tell Nabi Yunus, part of ancient Nineveh on the east bank of the Tigris, has been honoured for centuries as the grave of Nabi Yunus, the prophet sent to the people of Nineveh. The mosque over it dated from 1365 and was one of the best-loved landmarks of Mosul. In recent years archaeologists found tunnels beneath the site that led into an Assyrian royal palace, and in 2025 a giant winged bull was uncovered there. Work to rebuild the shrine and study the palace beneath it continues.
