Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi is a desert palace built around 109 AH (727) by the Umayyad caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, south-west of Palmyra. It was a residence and farming estate with gardens watered by a dam and channels, and its walls were decorated with carved stucco and painted floors. Its richly decorated gateway was taken down and rebuilt as the entrance of the National Museum of Damascus, where visitors can still see it. The remains of the palace itself stand in the open desert.
