About Umar ibn al-Khattab Mosque

Busra was the first city in Syria to come under Muslim rule, in 13 AH, and the Mosque of Umar in its old town is attributed to the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab. The building that stands today dates largely from the early Umayyad period, with an inscription from the reign of Yazid II, and it was restored by the Ayyubids. It is one of the oldest surviving mosques in Syria, with its courtyard, arcades of reused columns and square minaret. It stands among the black basalt ruins of Busra, a short walk from the Roman theatre and the ruins linked with the monk Bahira.
