The Citadel of Salkhad stands on a volcanic hill above the town of Salkhad in the south of Syria. The fortress was strengthened by the Ayyubids in the early thirteenth century to guard the route between Damascus and the desert. Its ruined walls and towers still dominate the town and offer views across the Hawran to the Jordanian border.
