The Citadel of Busra is a fortress built around the great Roman theatre of the city. Its walls and towers were raised mainly by the Ayyubids in the early thirteenth century, who turned the theatre into the heart of a stronghold guarding the route from Damascus to the Hijaz and the pilgrim road. The citadel is the reason the theatre survived so well. Visitors pass through the Ayyubid towers and halls before reaching the theatre, and it is usually visited together with the Mosque of Umar and the other sites of Busra.
