Shahba is the ancient Philippopolis, the city that the Roman emperor Philip the Arab, a native of the Hawran, built at his birthplace in the third century. Its theatre is among the best preserved monuments of the town. Around it lie the Roman baths, temples and paved streets of the city, built of the black basalt of the region. The Suwayda museum, which holds the famous mosaics from Shahba, is about 20 kilometres to the south.
