Mari, modern Tell Hariri, was one of the great cities of the Bronze Age, standing on the Euphrates near the present border with Iraq. Its royal palace of Zimri-Lim and the thousands of clay tablets found there are among the most important discoveries of ancient Near Eastern history. The ruins lie in the desert plain beside the river north-west of Abu Kamal, with the mud-brick walls of the palace and temples laid out around the site.
