Qal'at al-Rahba stands on a hill above the Euphrates near the town of al-Mayadin. A fortress was first founded here by Malik ibn Tawq in the early Abbasid period, and the castle seen today was rebuilt in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries after earthquakes, guarding the river route between Syria and Iraq. Its walls and deep moat make it one of the most impressive castles of the Euphrates valley.
