Halabiye and Zalabiye are twin fortresses facing each other across the Euphrates north of Deir ez-Zor, where the river passes through a narrow gorge. Halabiye was fortified in the third century by Queen Zenobia of Palmyra and later rebuilt by the Byzantines with massive walls climbing up to a hilltop citadel. Zalabiye, the smaller fort on the opposite bank, guarded the same crossing. The site offers dramatic views over the river.
