Dura-Europos was a frontier city founded around 300 BC on a cliff high above the Euphrates. It passed from the Seleucids to the Parthians and then the Romans, and it was destroyed by the Sasanian Persians in 256–257, after which it was abandoned. The city became famous for its remarkably preserved wall paintings, now kept in museums.
