Birkat al-Hajj is the great Roman reservoir of Busra, which took its present name in the Islamic period, when Busra became a stopping place for the pilgrim caravan travelling from Damascus to Makkah and Madinah. The pool held water for the pilgrims and their animals on the long road south. It still fills with water in the rainy season and is a popular place for a stroll for the people of Busra. The small Abu al-Fida Mosque stands beside it, and Busra Citadel and its Roman theatre are a short walk away.
