Siffin is the plain on the west bank of the Euphrates where, in 37 AH (657), the armies of Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib and Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan met in one of the most significant battles of early Islamic history. The fighting lasted for several days and ended with both sides agreeing to arbitration. Among those who fell at Siffin was the Companion Ammar ibn Yasir, whose shrine in Raqqa, shared with Uways al-Qarani, has its own listing on Muslim Maps. The battlefield lies near the village of Abu Asi, west of Raqqa.
