Lake Tabqa is the great reservoir formed on the Euphrates by the Tabqa Dam, completed in the 1970s, and the largest lake in Syria. It stretches for some 80 km along the former course of the river west of Raqqa. The rising water turned the hill of Ja'bar Castle into a promontory on the lake shore, and the castle is the best place from which to see it. The lake shore is also an outing spot for the people of Raqqa and Tabqa.
