The Hamidi Mosque, known in Raqqa as al-Jami' al-Kabir, is the oldest and largest mosque of the modern town. It was built in the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II, from whom it takes its name, and the surrounding quarter is named after it. The small Rashidiyya religious school was attached to it. The mosque has been under restoration in recent years. It stands in the centre of Raqqa near the Museum of Raqqa, and is distinct from the Abbasid Great Mosque of al-Rafiqa beside the old walls.
