The Calahorra Tower (Torre de la Calahorra) stands at the southern end of Córdoba’s Roman Bridge, guarding the city’s river crossing. Its origins date back to the Islamic period, when it was built by the Almohads in the 12th century as part of the city’s defensive system. The tower controlled access from the south and, together with the Puerta del Puente, secured Córdoba’s most important entrance across the Guadalquivir. The tower is a robust military structure of stone and brick, later modified after the Christian conquest of 1236, when additional towers and fortifications were added. Despite these later changes, it remains one of the most evocative reminders of Córdoba’s Islamic fortifications. Today, the Calahorra Tower houses the Museo Vivo de al-Andalus (Living Museum of al-Andalus), a cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the legacy of Córdoba’s Islamic civilisation. The museum highlights the city’s role as a centre of science, medicine, philosophy, and coexistence between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Exhibits include models of the Great Mosque and Madinat al-Zahra, interactive displays, and reconstructions of the intellectual and cultural achievements of al-Andalus. Standing opposite the Mezquita–Cathedral and aligned with the Roman Bridge, the Calahorra Tower symbolises Córdoba’s layered history—once a defensive stronghold of al-Andalus, now a museum celebrating its enduring heritage of knowledge and coexistence.
