The Gate of the Bridge, stands at the northern end of Córdoba’s Roman Bridge, marking the entrance into the historic city. Its origins trace back to the Islamic period, when this was the site of the Bab al-Qantara (Gate of the Bridge), a key gateway in the walls of Umayyad Córdoba. The gate controlled access from the river into the medina, linking the bridge, the Alcázar, and the Great Mosque. The original Islamic gate was rebuilt after the Christian conquest of 1236, and the present monumental form dates from the 16th century, when it was redesigned in Renaissance style by architect Hernán Ruiz III. Despite these later alterations, the site itself remains deeply tied to Córdoba’s Andalusí heritage, as this crossing over the Guadalquivir was the city’s most important access point in the time of the Caliphate. Today, the Puerta del Puente stands beside the Mezquita–Cathedral and the Calahorra Tower, forming part of the most emblematic ensemble of Córdoba’s historic centre. For visitors, it symbolises the continuity of Córdoba’s urban life—from the Umayyad gateway of al-Qantara to the Renaissance monument that survives today.
