About Salaam Monument

In July 2003, the city of Córdoba inaugurated the Salam (Peace) Monument in Miraflores Park, located along the banks of the Guadalquivir River opposite the historic centre. The name Salam —Arabic for peace—highlights Córdoba’s Islamic legacy and its historic role as a city of convivencia, where Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities lived side by side under the Caliphate. The monument serves as a modern tribute to the city’s past as a beacon of tolerance, knowledge, and cultural exchange during al-Andalus, when Córdoba was one of the most advanced cities of Europe and the Muslim world. Its riverside location, facing the Great Mosque–Cathedral and the Calahorra Tower, symbolically connects the monument to the city’s Islamic golden age, when the ideals of peace and learning shaped Córdoba’s identity.
