The Albolafia Nature Reserve is a protected natural monument along the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Córdoba, near the historic Roman Bridge and the Albolafia Watermill. Its name comes from the famous Albolafia noria (waterwheel), which was introduced during the Islamic period to lift water from the river for the gardens of the Umayyad Alcázar and the city. The surrounding river ecosystem, rich with reeds, willows, and poplars, became an essential part of the city’s life, providing water, irrigation, and supporting Córdoba’s flourishing during the Caliphate. Today, the area is both a natural and cultural heritage site. It preserves a unique riverine habitat that shelters numerous bird species, while also reflecting the Islamic engineering genius of the 9th–10th centuries when Córdoba was one of the greatest centres of civilisation. Walking along the Sotos, visitors experience a blend of natural beauty and historical depth—where the remains of Islamic-era hydraulic works stand in harmony with the landscape that once nourished the gardens, palaces, and baths of al-Andalus.
