In the sixteenth century the number of zawiyas, lodges where pilgrims and residents could stay, grew from about ten to several hundred in Madinah, each room given to one person. Among them was a large zawiya of forty rooms that the Ottoman Sultan Murad III had built near Masjid Quba in 1577-78. Nothing of the zawiya survives. Its site lies a short walk east of Masjid Quba.
