Maqna lies on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba in the old land of Madyan, a palm oasis whose people made a treaty with Nabi Muhammad ﷺ in the early years of Islam. Its freshwater springs are known as Ayn Musa, the Springs of Musa, after Nabi Musa, whose years in Madyan are remembered along this coast. The springs rise on the hillsides behind the town and their water runs through groves of date and doum palms down to the shore, with the remains of the ancient town on a plateau to the east and caves in the hills around. Visitors report that the spring area has been closed at times.
