Ma'qar al-Naqah is a spot north of Hegra that local people honour as the place where the she-camel of Nabi Salih was hamstrung by the people of Thamud. The story of Nabi Salih and the she-camel sent as a sign to Thamud is told in the Qur'an, and Hegra, with its tombs carved into the rock, is known as al-Hijr, the land of Thamud. The site lies beside the road in a valley surrounded by high rock outcrops. The Dwellings of Thamud at Hegra are a short drive to the south.
