In Rajab 9 AH, Nabi Muhammad ﷺ led the largest army of his lifetime, around thirty thousand, on the long march to Tabuk in the summer heat, after reports of a Byzantine army gathering in the north. The Byzantines did not appear, and after staying at Tabuk for about twenty days and making treaties with the towns of the region, the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. Masjid al-Tawbah, the Mosque of Repentance, stands where he is said to have prayed during his stay. Its name is linked with the repentance of Ka'b ibn Malik and two other Companions who stayed behind from the expedition and were later forgiven. The mosque has been rebuilt several times and stands in the old centre of Tabuk near the castle.
