Masjid al-Hawzah stands in the centre of the old al-Hawzah quarter of Dhahran al-Janub, about 20 km from the Yemeni border. Its first building is reported to have been raised by Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib when Nabi Muhammad ﷺ sent him to call the people of Yemen to Islam, and prayers have been held in it ever since. The people of the village restored it in 1213 AH, and rooms for visitors were added beside it in the reign of King Abdulaziz. It was restored again in the second phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, and now holds about 148 worshippers.
