Bir Hima, about 130 km north of Najran, was a watering station on the ancient caravan route between southern Arabia and the north. Its wells cut into the rock served travellers for thousands of years, and the surrounding rocks carry around 550 panels of carvings and inscriptions in Thamudic, South Arabian and Kufic scripts. The Hima Cultural Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021. A few panels can be seen without a guide, but much of the area is protected and needs a permit to visit.
