About Masjid Abu Bakr al-Siddiq

This is the oldest mosque of old Thar, about 3 km west of the town of Thar and some 120 km north-east of Najran. It was the only mosque of the area where the Friday prayer was held, and it served as a place of learning, with classes in writing and Qur'an memorisation, and as the place where people met to resolve disputes. It is built of mud brick and timber. It was restored in the first phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, launched in 2018, which rebuilt it in the Najran style, enlarged it to about 300 square metres and added a prayer area for women.
