Masjid al-Abbasah, also known as the mosque of Sharif Abu Talib, was built in 1262 AH (1846) by Sharif Muhammad Abu Talib in Abu Arish, about 35 km east of Jazan. The date is recorded in an inscription above the mihrab, and the mosque takes its name from the al-Abbasah family, who served as its imams and caretakers. Before modern schools it was a centre of learning where children studied reading, writing and the Qur'an. It was restored in the second phase of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, and it holds about 165 worshippers.
