About Hamidiyyah Government House

The Hamidiyyah was the Ottoman government house of Makkah, begun in 1885 by the governor of the Hijaz, Osman Nuri Pasha, and named after Sultan Abdülhamid II. It housed the governor and the Ottoman officials of the province, and was built in the European neoclassical style then used for state buildings across the empire, with materials and skilled workers brought from outside the Hijaz. It faced Masjid al-Haram near Bab Umm Hani and Bab al-Wada', and the inscriptions over its doors praised the sultan and the governor in Arabic verse. The building no longer stands. Its site lies about 125 metres south-west of the Ka'bah, within the enlarged mosque.
