About Al-Hazwarah & the Old Gate of al-Wada'

Al-Hazwarah was a market of Makkah in the time before Islam, on the south-western side of the Ka'bah, which was later taken into Masjid al-Haram. A Companion, Abdullah ibn Adi ibn al-Hamra', saw the Prophet ﷺ standing at al-Hazwarah and heard him tell Makkah that it was the best and most beloved to Allah of all His lands, and that he would not have left it had he not been made to. The gate built on this side was called Bab al-Hazwarah and Bab al-Wada', and beside it rose one of the minarets of the old mosque, first built by the caliph al-Mahdi and rebuilt in 772 AH after it fell. The gate and its minaret were removed when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Their site lies inside the present mosque, about 90 to 120 metres south-west of the Ka'bah.
