Al-Hafirah was the last fort of the Syrian Hajj road before Madinah, where caravans arriving from Damascus made their final stop before entering the city of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ. The Hejaz Railway's al-Hafirah station was built at the same place. The forts of the route stored provisions, including food for the pilgrims' return journey, and gave shelter to the poor, to lost travellers and to those separated from their caravans. The fort stands about 30 km north-west of Madinah. It is one of the sites of the Syrian Hajj Road, which Saudi Arabia has placed on UNESCO's Tentative List.
